At the south-western foothill of the Romanian Carpathians, sixty kilometres northwards from the Danube River, there is one of the most isolated communities of Europe. Separated from the surrounding Romania culturally, by religion and language, the small Czech municipality of Šumice survives as one of the six villages settled by Czech emigrants at the beginning of the 19th century. Geographically distant from its five bigger Czech sisters, Šumice has long been outside the main focus of interest of tourists, ethnographers and the civilisation. Still tied to work in the field, weather effects and joy from free spaces, the sixty living inhabitants of this village wake up each morning into a new day, but they also feel the approaching end.
