Periphery

“Periphery” is a long-term project (since 2014), covering the lives of people from the lowest social class in Bratislava and its surroundings. The photographer has immersed himself in the marginalised culture from the inside and slowly became part of the community’s everyday life. The whole project has so far been carried out without any help or interference from NGOs, social workers or police. The most critical surroundings of the city were chosen for the purpose of the project in order to build a deep understanding of the situation in Bratislava. The vast majority of the people from the bottom are struggling either with drugs (heroin and methamphetamine) or alcohol addiction. The author’s experience suggests that there is very little hope for these people and it is almost impossible to get back to normal life. The aim of the project is to raise awareness, fight against prejudices and document this part of Slovak society for the first time in its history.
